What Are Dental Crowns?

The crown of your tooth is the portion of your tooth above the surface of the gumline. Sometimes your tooth’s crown can become too damaged for a filling. When this happens, we may recommend a dental crown (a dental cap), which is essentially a tooth-shaped restoration that is placed over your natural teeth.

This crown will cover the entire visible portion of your tooth so that your tooth’s root and remaining structure can be preserved. If your tooth’s natural crown is decayed, broken, or weak, a dental crown can restore its original size and shape.

The Benefits Of Our Porcelain Crowns

Thanks to Dr. Miely’s amazing skill, setting a dental crown rarely takes longer than two hours. This makes crowns a quick and ideal solution for several restorative dentistry treatment options. Especially when you consider dental crowns have a number of attractive benefits for dental patients, such as:

  • Preserve your roots after damage: Even if the crown portion of your tooth is damaged, your tooth roots are often still intact and able to function healthily as long as the enamel isn’t too badly compromised. Dental crowns restore your tooth while they keep your remaining root structure intact.
  • Protect your damaged tooth: The hard white surface of a tooth is called enamel, and it does not heal naturally. This means every chip, crack, or erosion that occurs over your life cannot be fixed, compounding the risks a tooth faces every year: a dental crown or cap offers added protection.
  • Improve your smile aesthetic: Each dental crown is crafted to fit and blend in with your natural teeth. Your crown will look like your natural teeth, allowing a damaged, misshapen, or shortened tooth to become cosmetically pleasing.
  • Enjoy a full, functional smile: When your teeth are damaged, it can impact your life in many ways. Your confidence takes a knock, chewing can become painful, you slur certain words, and your remaining teeth can shift. But full functionality can be yours once more with our beautiful dental crowns!

Are There Other Options?

We don’t believe in a “one size fits all” policy. This is exactly why we provide beautiful dental bridges in addition to our porcelain dental crowns. Where a dental crown may be the right option to restore a single missing tooth, you may want to consider a dental bridge for a more thorough restoration.

Understanding Dental Bridges

A dental bridge uses a series of dental crowns to ‘bridge’ a gap left by a missing tooth. Dental bridges can replace one tooth or multiple teeth in a row by using crowns on the adjacent teeth as anchor points. Dr. Miely creates dental bridges that are both cosmetically appealing and highly durable, right here in Upper Arlington and offers comprehensive sedation options so that you feel comfortable throughout your procedure.

Why Would I Need Bridges Rather Than a Crown?

While both dental crowns and bridges are excellent restorative options, they serve different purposes. While crowns are better for single tooth restorations, dental bridges are specifically designed to replace one or more missing teeth.

If you’re looking to save and protect an existing, albeit damaged tooth, a crown is likely the solution. If you need to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth in a row, Dr. Miley is more likely to recommend a dental bridge for your treatment.

What Is The Process Like?

Getting a dental crown or bridge may feel like a big step, but we’re here to make the process as straightforward as possible.

For a dental crown, Dr. Miely will start by gently preparing your damaged tooth and taking a precise impression to be able to craft your permanent restoration. However, we want you to start loving your smile again as soon as you can, which is why you’ll leave with a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being made. It’s during your second visit that we’ll place your new crown. Here’s, we’ll also make sure that it’s a perfect fit and looks natural.

For those getting a dental bridge, you can expect a similar, seamless process. We'll start by preparing the teeth on either side of your gap, which will serve as anchors for your restoration. We then take an impression to create your custom bridge, which will be designed to fit perfectly and blend in with your smile. Due to what’s needed for this restoration, we aren’t able to provide a temporary solution for your smile, but as soon as your bridge is ready, we'll have you back for your second visit to bond it in place permanently. This will close the gap in your smile and give you back complete functionality and confidence!

For both procedures, our goal is to make you feel at ease and excited about the stunning results!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many appointments are needed for a dental crown?

Getting a dental crown typically requires two appointments. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared and an impression is taken. At the second appointment, the finished crown is permanently bonded to your tooth.

How long do dental crowns last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, a porcelain dental crown can last for 10 to 15 years or even longer.

How do I care for my new dental bridge or crown?

Caring for a dental bridge or dental cap is similar to caring for your natural teeth. It's important to brush and floss daily. We recommend using a floss threader or a special interdental brush to clean the area underneath the false tooth and prevent plaque buildup.

Do crowns and bridges hurt to place?

No, the process for both crowns and bridges is generally painless. Dr. Miely uses a local anesthetic to numb the area during the preparation and placement. You may experience some minor sensitivity after the procedure, which is temporary.
